Impressive large pair of 18/19thC Thai bronze Buddha devotees. They are mix of early Rattanakosin style and late Ayuthaya styles, though the distinctive faces have influence from the Mon style. The Mon people covered part of what is modern day Burma and Thailand. They have been absorbed into modern southeast Asian countries, and have not had a distinct identity of their own geographically since the 18th/19thC. . They are in nearly perfect condition, with the long pointed finials still fully intact-typically at least one of these as well as some of the ornamentation has some loss. Extremely large for their type (especially an original matched set) measuring 19" tall, 10.5" x 7". Minor losses, as seen in photos. Quite heavy, as they retain most of the original(and correct for the period) clay core. Would be desirable and of value in this size, age, quality and condition- the very unusual and powerful "Mon" faces make these even more uncommon and visually striking. I've gone through all my reference books and cannot find a single Buddha or Devotee with this very compelling face on this style of Buddha. To summarize, it is a transitional piece between 2 cultures (Thai and Mon) and 2 periods of Thai art and history (Ayuthaya and Rattnakosin. The result is this one of a kind pair, which would have likely flanked a Buddha that sat a good 3 feet tall.
