Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
This is a beautiful late 18th century, or possibly 19th century Sino-Tibetan Buddhist sculpture of Amateyus: who I believe embodies long life. There were a large number of these made during the period of the Quean Long Emperor (mostly in the 1770's and 1780's) that were give out as gifts on the occasion of his birthday or his mother's birthday. This one has an inscription on the front which is still legible, although I cannot read it. Most of this style I have seen are cast in bronze. This one (along with another on my website) is cast out of pure copper. Parts of this one are also done in a repousse method and are attached (such as the crown and jewels. This one has a particularly beautiful face, and a first class patina: some of the original gilding remains, and the copper has developed a deep red chocolate color. In excellent condition: he originally had a mandorla and bowl, but like many or most of these, they have been lost over the years. He sits a bit over 7 inches tall. The bottom is still sealed with its original contents.
