This is a large Mon standing Buddha from the early Ayuthaya period: it has both Thai and Burmese influence, but is probably from the Burmese Mon people. I've seen small piecess with this sort of face and posture, but never such a large. beautiful and heavily cast piece. There are deep curves in the wonderful face that repeat in the cupped hands and the full breasts. Those of you who have been following my auctions for a while may have noticed that recently I have been putting up some of my larger and finer pieces. This is one of them. He stands 24.5 inches tall: I put a 7.25 inch Buddha in one photo to give a sense of his great size. He weighs a very substantial 29.5 pounds could wax poetic about the incredibly benevolent and compassionate face, but I'll leave it to the photos to illustrate his great quality. I've had to lighten the photos, as the bronze is almost a black color.
