This is an extremely unusual and very striking Buddha head from central Burma from the 15/16th century. As the label on the base indicates, it is a 15/16th century interpretation of an 10/11th century style. I've shown it to a number of knowledgeable collectors: all felt that it was quite old, although none had seen another quite like it. The sculpting and finishing are exceptional, as is the condition. The back is not completely finished, but this was not uncommon on early stone sculptures. This came from a very reliable source, who had owned this for many years. It is quite large: the actual head is over 7 inches tall by 4 inches wide with a circumference of about 12 inches. Including the stand it is 9.5 inches tall. I put a 7.25 inch Buddha in one photo to give a sense of its large size. It weighs 53 ounces. The face is quite powerful: it draws attention, even in a crowd of Buddhas
