Country Group: China, Japan and Korea
Very special 18thC Buddhist monk with glass eyes made from lacquer. Sits 5 1/8" tall, 5" at widest point, 4 1/8" deep. From the collection of a well respected collector and dealer who is also a certified appraiser of Asian antiques. He believed it is probably Japanese, though possibly Chinese. Weathered, and hands a bit loose, but (remarkably) there is no repair, damage, or loss other than to the surface as seen in the photos. The eyes are compelling, the face full of wisdom and serenity.
