Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)

Item id: 5144

Rare very large and authentic 8/9thC solid-cast copper (?) Buddha of Compassion in a Prakhon Chai style. Part of a group of several hundred bronzes excavated in eastern Thailand near the Cambodian border in 1964 after a ground collapse exposed them during the monsoon rains. This is one of the largest of the group, and is a museum worthy, world class sculpture. Arms re-attached at the elbows(were originally cast separately). This is the most valuable Buddha in my entire collection. Figure alone is an impressive 38.5", attached base is 13.25" x 12" x 12". Incredibly heavy. I've never seen one this size on the market, and most examples in museums are smaller(including the examples in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York). This is also the only example of any type I can find with a small Naga Buddha embedded in the stylized hair atop the head.
