Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)

Item id: 529

This is something very special!! An authentic 18th century Quianlong Buddha of Compassion made of WOOD. It is every bit as detailed, and done in the same traditional form as the more common bronze form. I purchased this from a prominent collector/dealer some years ago: he had bought it out of an American estate:: he had not seen another quite like it in 30 years of collecting. I've only seen them in high end auction catalogues. Remarkably: it is in excellent condition: there is minor loss to one the side of the crown in the back (only noticeable upon inspection from the back: all the fingers and details are fully intact. The lacquer all looks to be original: it may have been re-gilded at some point. I can see no apparent repairs or other reworking. This is no doubt authentic (look at the bottom, which is still sealed and holds its original contents). The previous owner not only is an ASA certified appraiser of Asian Art, but he is also one of the people who has vetted the Chinese items at the high end Pacific Arts of Asia antique show in San Francisco each year. Aside from the rarity and authenticity, I need to mention the most important thing: the INCREDIBLE beatific face and countenance on this figure: it is the best of the best: it held a central spot in my home among hundreds of Buddhas for a long time: this is especially remarkable given that I am usually much more attracted to SE Asian Buddhas, and to Bronze rather to wood. This Buddha, in the right light, shines so brightly, that it fills the whole room with light. Sits 6.75 tall by 5. 15 inches wide.
