This is a remarkable Indonesian Buddha which came out of an old estate. I believe the previous owner had lived in during the colonial period and obtained this piece then. It is extremely high quality repousse work done in silver, with almost pure gold ornamentation (previous owner, an elderly Dutch man reported he had the silver and gold metal content checked- I have not done so myself . He is filled with some material which gives him weight. At first I thought he was not very old, but then I noticed how the lotus base appears to have slowly collapsed over a long period of time, so that now the double lotus is disappearing in to itself (there is now a plug of wood in the bottom which is probably not original). Also, the ankles also show some of the signs of bearing weight over a long period of time. The quality is extremely fine, and the proportions are classic. I truly have no idea how to date him, though I am convinced that he has authentic age. My instincts tell me 19thC, though he may be earlier. His large size and high quality, and the fact that he is antique, and is silver with gold makes him quite special. He is also a beautiful thing to look at. A bit over 12.15 inches tall by 4.5 inches wide.
