Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)
This is an extra special standing Buddha from Laos or Thailand near the Laos border. It is made of wood, and is in very good condition, with the only loss being to one ear, plus expectable wear to the lacquer and gilding. I've never seen another like it. The condition suggests that it may have lived most of its life protected deep in a cave. Also, it is made of teak, which is resistant to bugs and rot. The face is marvelous, with a deep serenity and dignity rarely found in folk art of this type. It is a very good size at 11 inches. The hair is made of lacquer, and the base is some kind of terra cotta or stone that I think is original to the piece.
