9-11thC Indonesian, Javanese, or other related island Bronze Buddha. Very unusual small elephant on the left side of the base. The one on the right side is long missing. Some other loss to the lower base, but otherwise in exceptional condition for its type, as most of the surviving examples were buried and show considerable deterioration. The most remarkable aspect of this piece is the beautiful face, which displays a sense of deep serenity and calm. Special very rare piece. Purchased 25 years ago from the estate of a Dutch gentleman whose family lived in Indonesia in the late 19th early 20th century. Sits 5" tall.
