Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
Animated antique Mongolian wood with polychrome Citipati dancing the dance of life (and death!). A long time personal favorite. Originally part of a Gau Box which probably had glass in front that protected the figures from the harsh Mongolian elements. This piece formed the back of the box- the back of the piece shows age. Purchased directly from a Mongolian collector in the 1990's, when he was selling of part of his collection to help pay for his daughters college tuition. In a custom made frame, with the carved piece able to be removed easily. Loss of two of the small skulls in the heads- otherwise exceptional. Measures 5.5 x 8.25 inches, outer frame is 2.25 inches deep and 15.25 x 17.75 inches. Fabulous and fierce!
