Country Group: China, Japan and Korea
Last decade of 6th century. There is a famous near identical example that is depicted in several books of nearly the same size, subject, casting style, alloys used, quality, etc., that is dated to the 590's. This one is slightly better. Stands 10 1/8 inches tall (bronze alone), height on custom stand is 11.25 inches. Brought back to USA in 1953 by US serviceman living in South Korea during and just after the Korean War. Examined by several appraisers, people associated with the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco(who wanted me to consider donating it to them)True museum piece that is better than many of the best Korean pieces in many museums. Large and heavy- especially for such an early piece. Condition is outstanding- wear and some chips to the tails of the Apsaras all around the edges, but patina is superb and overall look is stunning.
