Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)
This is a portrait sculpture of a famous Northern Thai monk. This piece is sensitively and skillfully carved out of a single (massive) piece of teak. There is some minor age splitting. Some age, but certainly 20th C. It sits an impressive 16 7/8 inches tall, 13.5 inches wide, 6.25 inches deep. Purchased from a Thai gentleman who is a devotee of this monk. I've seen a few over the decades of different Thai monks, but this is one of the most finely carved, largest, and has the kindest sweetest face. It was carved by a master. Also, it is impossible to find teak logs this massive any more. Look at the dimensions and you will realize this was carved from one solid block. Reserve is far below what last owner paid in Thailand for this piece (not new when he got it) some time ago.
