Superb antique champleve or cloisonné Bodhisattva cast in bronze. Very unusual type. Large and of unusually beautiful composition and proportions. I've seen hundreds of related pieces over the past 25 years, but never another one like this. Stands an impressive 15.5 inches tall, and heavy for its size. The process of applying cloisonné or champlevé (cloisonné is building up walls, champlevé is digging out channels- in both cases the spaces created are filled with enamel powder which is then fired to create a glassy enamel surface- this process is very difficult on non-flat surfaces-like figures- and typically leaves pitting and other imperfections- this is not damage, but is considered usual for this type of sculpture) Late 19th century. Special.
