Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)
This is the earliest type of Chiang Sen Buddha, known as Chiang Sen Lanka., as it is strongly influenced by Sri Lankan Buddhist style. There is very little written about this type, and there are very few available. They almost always tend to be quite small. This one is a particularly good example, with the simple base with the legs that come to the very edge, the broad chest, and the distinctive head which is quite different than the later Chiang Sen Buddhas. These are quite prized by Thai collectors, and are now extremely expensive in Thailand (I have a number of examples I bought many years ago). This piece is not cheap, but I could not replace him today for this price without a whole lot of luck. This piece sits a little under 3.5 inches tall. Quite special!
