Now for something completely different- one of the stranger Buddhas I have encountered- Antique Lao Buddha- he looks as if he is deep in to the night steadfastly facing the demons before the dawn (or maybe the sculptor was possessed!). Note that he does not use the “subduing Mara” mudra, which symbolizes sitting though the night and winning the battle with illusion and the demons which get in the way of enlightenment. Also note that he does not have a finial symbolizing enlightenment. He is very powerful- give him time and he will get there (and maybe help you along the way). His eyes are set with old glass beads. My guess on age is 75 years old, although very hard to date. . Lovely and refined base helps balance the Buddha’s deep gaze. Sits close to 5.5 inches tall.
