Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
Beautiful stone ritual make-up or herb plate from the Gandharan or other early Eastern civilization. Some of the other objects in the grouping in which this object was found suggest it may be from one of the civilizations adjacent to ancient Gandhara, in Northern India/Pakistan, from the first centuries AD. Entered in to The Asian Art Museum collection in 1960 as part of the original Avery Brundage collection, and de-accessioned by the Museum 15 years ago in preparation for their move to their new San Francisco location. Likely over 1500 years old, and possibly much older. Has the name of the archeologist who originally collected and catalogued him (Farquar), along with 2 sets of museum numbers. 3 7/8 inches square, 6.75 inches on custom stand.
