Item id: 81

a very curious piece. It is a a very early Laos Buddha: I would have guessed 15/16th century. It has some high relief ancient writing on it that I cannot read. IT ALSO has a date on it of 1956 in western numbers. One friend believed that the date was put on it in modern times so that someone could take it ou of Laos as a relatively new piece. After examining it, the numbers look to me to be quite old. I'm not sure, however, that they had westrn numbers in Laos at that time. I have no doubt that this piece is many hundreds of years old and is NOT from 1956 on the western calendar. The base is integral and original to the Buddha. It is a very serene and simple Buddha, with traces of old lacquer and paint. It stands 6 and 3/4 inches tall
