Early Tibetan Painted Storage Chest – Ex. Estate of Comedian Gary Shandling
A large and visually striking early Tibetan chest, formerly in the estate of the late comedian Gary Shandling. Constructed primarily of wood, leather, and early iron fittings—along with other traditional Tibetan materials—this substantial chest features bold, brightly colored painted panels, centered by an ornate stupa motif framed within complex geometric and floral designs. The current paint layer appears to be at least 100 years old, while the chest itself is likely several centuries old, consistent with its construction, surface wear, and early hardware.
The chest retains a compelling aged character, with expected repairs, repainting, and scattered losses to the decoration accumulated over generations. Hardware is partially missing, loose, or worn, yet the structure remains stable and suitable for practical storage use (though not for sitting). The piece exhibits no strong odors or structural issues that would impede placement in a home environment.
Measuring an impressive 18" x 26" x 49", this trunk offers both sculptural presence and functionality. Originally priced at twice the current starting value, it represents an exceptional example of its type with strong provenance and considerable decorative impact. Professional shipping is required; assistance is available.
