14/15thC Late Pagan/ Toungoo bronze Buddha. Missing one earlobe. This is one of the many rare and interesting Burmese Buddha variations found in Burmese Buddhist art. The interplay of the variety of ethnic groups and kingdoms over the centuries produced literally dozens of sub-types- many of which are rarely referenced in books. This one- with the distinctive pinched Pagan face, though softened by the rounder face found in the influence of the(14th/15thC) Ava period, and the simple square base that is typically found on early Shan and mid-period Mon pieces. Sits 7 and 1/8 inches tall, and 9 inches on the custom base (quite large for this type). Sometimes these different types were being made simultaneously in different parts of what is now modern Burma, separated by a mountain range or other natural or political barrier. Wonderful that he still retains much of his original gilding. A real collector's piece. Start Price lowered by $1000
