Price significantly reduced! Extremely fine and very large Early Rattanakosin Royal Standing Buddha in the Calming the Waters, or Stopping Fear Mudra. This was cast during sometime during the reign of either Rama 11 or Rama 111 (roughly 1825 to 1850). It stands a very impressive 37 inches without the modern wooden base, and 44 inches tall with the base. It is extremely heavy- It is too heavy for my postal. Remarkably, there is no loss or damage or repair other than typical wear to the gilding as seen in the photos. On Buddhas of this size and complexity, this is extremely rare. There are obviously many levels of quality in the castings of Buddhas- on Royal Rattanakosin Buddhas, as they grow larger, the importance of the casting quality increases , as the beauty of these Buddhas is focused on the splendor of their fantastic detail. Many other Thai style focus on more on simplicity. other Buddha styles. As they get larger, it becomes increasingly difficult to keep the small detail as finely cast as it is on this Buddha. Click on the photo of the face, upper chest and finger tips, as it gives the best large photo of the detail (the other photos are a little washed out). The tip of the head and the finial are a thickly cast separate piece- in a few photos this piece is not set on completely evenly-this is not a flaw- it can be shifted in place easily. The inlaid eyes look to be original, and remarkably many of the tiny mirror like “jewels” are still in place after over 150 years. Spent time looking at the awesome composition of this royal beauty- these earlier Rattanakosin Buddhas are less common than the late ones, and are generally more finely made. This size is also especially difficult to find from this early period (larger than the small to medium ones, but smaller than the near life sized ones) This is certainly the finest one of this size I have owned, and is one of the best I have ever seen outside of temple. It was purchased out of a mid-west estate which had a number of Buddhas of high quality and beauty and size. I bought two from the collection, as I had no more space, and I also couldn’t be sure they were real, as they were so large, beautiful, and perfect. They both turned out to be authentic, and I deeply wished I had gone back for them all. This piece will need to be crated and sent by truck.
