A large and dynamic 19th century Mongolian bronze fierce deity on horseback. Purchased by previous owner from famed Asian Antiquity dealer Rudi in 1961 at a time when few dealers were bring Mongolian and Tibetan bronzes to the US. Rudi was also a spiritual teacher who funded his teaching through his antique trade. By great coincidence, my very first teacher (a famed and respected teacher in his own right) studied under Rudi in the 1960's. 14.75 inches tall, 11 inches nose to tail. On its custom base it sits an impressive 16.5 inches tall. The horse has one of the most sensitively modeled hose faces I have come across on a Mongolian statue. The entire piece is a remarkable juxtaposition of provincial folk art and refined spiritual art. It is amazing the extent to which it is both naive and sophisticated at the same time- all the while conveying tremendous energy and movement. Very different than any other Mongolian statue I have offered, large or small. Figure is loosely attached to base. Tail repaired, and other small damages/repairs as seen in the photos. A one of a kind piece.
