Authentic Bronze Sukhothai Walking Buddha. Probably 17thC-maybe a little earlier or later-hard to know for sure. Ninety eight percent of this type on the market are either modern copies or are late 19thC/early 20thC emulations made under King Rama V., generally in Bangkok. He loved this style and resurrected it under his reign, and had them made in large numbers throughout his reign. This is not an early stylized piece, but it is still an authentic Sukhothai Walking Buddha piece made in the Sukhothai area during the Post Sukhothai period. Quite rare, especially in such fine condition and with such a beautiful face. Unclear that it was ever gilded. Height is 11.25 inches tall for the bronze alone (not including the post on the bottom), 12.5 on the custom stand. Crack in wrist, but I do not think it was broken and reaired or that it is in danger of breaking, but that the "crack"where the hand was originally attached to the arm when it was first cast, There is another spot in the upper arm where you can see a similar phenomenon. This was likely originally covered with lacquer. Walking Buddhas are the least common of the 4 traditional Positions for Buddhas, and usually only found in Thailand, and occasionally in Laos and Burma.
