Country Group:The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
Item id: 8530

Large, elaborate, and animated antique Himalayan monk with silver inlay. Probably from Nepal, though it is unique in its ornamentation and styling and may be from a neighboring kingdom. Incredible amount of detailing, including silver inlaid eyes and other silver inlaid design work as seen in the photos. Writing along the very lowest edge of the base all around the bottom of the statue. Appears as if the lions and other figural pieces on the base were separately cast and added later. The face is wonderful- joyful, alive, radiant- all one hopes for in the face of a religious statue. Extremely large and heavy at 10 1/8" tall with its integral base. Collected by the previous owner from a Northern European auction house, I've never seen another like it. Guesstimate on age is 100 years old or older. This figure has real charisma, and while I've seen 10's of thousands of related pieces over the decades, this one manages to be unique and to truly stand out in a special way.
