Item id: 8553

Fine quality Pyu era (pre-10th century) Burmese Buddha made of terracotta. This one has the best face I have seen on this type (even though he has lost his nose). I have owned and hundreds I have seen in 25+ years. These are very high relief, made of a soft material, and have no lip to protect the face from wear, so it is amazing that the face has survived all this time. Crisp casting- deserves to be in a book or museum. I bought several (in the early 10990's) in Northern Thailand, out of a sack filled with hundreds that were excavated in the jungle in an overgrown site in Burma sometime in the past (I could not communicate in English with the people I was buying them from). Many were broken/damaged, This one was the star of the group. This piece measures 3.75" tall (approx.) and 5 5/8" on its custom base.
