Rare, intense, and refined solid cast head of (probably) a Saddhu or Hindu holy man from Northern India. Based on the nearly completely worn gilding, nearly black patina, extremely refined work, and haunting finesse and depth to his face, I believe he is at least 18/19thC, and possibly older. Others have felt he might be from Japan, simply because the quality of the metal work is so refined. A few other places also did work to such a refined level. The introspective and reflective expression is sophisticated, and quite calming and unlike any piece I have owned in 30 years. A remarkable piece by any standard. Solid cast, and quite heavy for its size. It measures 4.75 inches for the head alone and 7.75" tall on its custom base. This one may visit you in your dreams (he's already shown up in mine!).
