Item id: 8763

Large antique standing wooden Sri Lankan Buddha. Likely 19th to early 20th century. Flaw to face as seen in photos, but despite this, the face is remarkably sensitive in its modelling, and in its transmission of compassion, peace, and equanimity. Very interesting pyro-technique (I think using a hot pin?) to leave a pattern on the entire surface for design in a method that would have taken many many hours to complete, as it covers the entire body, back and base in great detail. The Mandorla behind the head is also very beautiful. Rare type. Total piece measures 19 1/4 inches tall x 7 1/8 inches wide x 4 inches deep.
