Earliest of Wood Buddhas from Japan. Deeply spiritual, 8/9th century (yes--it is really made of wood, and that early!) Buddha with an exquisite face and beautiful carving. He has an absolutely superb original patina. The Buddha is in magnificent shape, with the body nearly perfect. The backplate, once huge and elaborate, is a shadow of its former self. Shows evidence of many repairs and losses. Evidence of very old--possibly original--polychrome. A few lotus leaves missing. One detached leaf included. Measures 13 1/4 inches (to the top of the backplate) tall x 8 inches (at widest point) x 5.5 inches (at deepest point). Near masterpiece, and the earliest wood object I have ever held in my hands, and certainly the oldest wooden Buddha I have ever offered--by far.
