Very special 7/8thC Korean bronze of a Bodhisattva. One of the best in my entire collection. See Sotheby's "The Art of the Buddha" (Lot 60) on September 22, 2004, held in New York for an almost identical example. The estimate on Sotheby's example was 10 to 15 thousand- 20 years ago (before auction premiums). If you can get a copy of that auction catalog you will see that this piece has a more attractive and less worn face. In that catalog, they say that this type of bronze is extremely rare for early Korean sculpture in the way the hip sways out, as Korean sculpture from the earliest periods is almost always rigid in posture. Measures: 6 3/8 inches tall. The only real difference between the two is the arm position and the better (more defined) face on mine. It is possible the arm on this one has changed position over 1its life, and that it started out the same as the Sotheby example. years. The start price has been lowered by $7000 from the original start price.
