Here we have a superb 14th century Utong “ B” Thai Buddha. Buddhas of this type display the transition from the Khmer domination of Thailand to a truly original Thai style. These pre-dated the Ayuthaya style. Examples from this early period of this quality are quite rare and are highly sought after. Often examples from this type have serious expressions and are not as joyful and loving as this example. The truly successful Buddhas of this type (as is this one) are both powerful and masculine, and at the same time, radiate peace and happiness. There are very few styles of Buddhas in any period and place which do this so successfully as the best of this type. Sits 8 and 5/8 inches tall by 5 and 5/8 inches wide at the base. The patina is untouched, and the underside looks absolutely correct. Note- the vast majority of this type on the market are not authentic- be extremely careful in purchasing this style.
