Masterpiece 9th Century Stone Durga from Java.This exceptional 9th Century Javanese Durga stands as one of the finest sculptures I have had the honor of offering in over three decades of collecting. The figure radiates a profound spiritual presence, immediately felt in the serene yet commanding expression and the perfectly balanced stance. The carving is unequivocally classic for the period, exhibiting confident lines, refined detail, and a harmonious sense of proportion.
The surface retains its original, untouched patina, a testament to centuries of devotion and careful preservation. Weighing approximately 100 pounds and measuring 23 inches in height by 11 inches in width, it is an imposing and deeply impressive work—one that has long held a central place on the main altar of my home gallery.
Aside from the expected loss of the bull figure, the sculpture remains in remarkably fine condition for a piece that has endured more than 1,200 years. This Durga entered The Buddha Gallery many years ago from a respected South African collection, and it remains one of my all-time personal favorites—a true museum-quality masterpiece of early Javanese art.
