13-15thC Dvarati Clay Buddha Tablet from Thailand. - An exceptional and unique example- came from the best collection of these I have ever seen. Rare to find in any condition- this one is exceptional in that it is done as an INVERSE image, so rather than being a raised image, it is recessed. I believe it was made to be used as a MOLD to make other clay or terracotta Buddhas. Most of the amulet and Buddha tablet molds I've seen have been made of metal or carved out of stone, as they are more durable, but clay ones were often used-especially in early times. It appears that if you cleared out a bit of the efflorescence from the grooves, that you might be able to still make beautiful Buddhas from this mold (I do not recommend doing this!)5.25"H x 3.5"W _ .65lbs - .290kg.
