Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
A fabulous and very rare item- a very early gilded solid copper Nepalese Bodhisattva group. It is either 12th century or possibly 13thC, and it retains most of its gilding. The faces on the two figures are superb, as is the overall workmanship. The back is not completely finished or gilded, as was the custom on these very early pieces. . Many turquoise and semiprecious stones remain- it is unclear if they are original or replacements. It is currently set in to a beautiful and uncommon very early Indian or Nepalese bronze base made for a much larger figure. The statue is 7 inches tall not including the plinth (piece that sticks out of the bottom for mounting). It stands 12 inches tall by 9 inches wide when mounted in the base.
