Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
10th/11th Century Northeast Indian Pala Bronze Deity Anika. The figure measures 3 inches tall, 2 7/8 inches wide, and 1 7/8 inches deep; 4.5 inches tall on its new custom base. At the foot of the cow is what appears to be a mound of ritual offerings. This is a very early and rare Pala-period bronze—few small bronzes of this age survive intact after a millennium of devotion, especially with faces preserved.
Although this example shows expected ritual wear, it remains remarkably beautiful, displaying the sensitive modeling and fine proportions characteristic of a highly skilled sculptor. A scarce and evocative piece of early Indian bronze artistry.
