Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)
This is a very uncommon example of a 14th or possibly 15th century Mon style Burmese Buddha. It has some features which echo the Pagan style of a few centuries earlier, and some things in common with the Ava style with which it is contemporary. It is, however, completely Mon. The Mon people had a strong presence in Burma for more than a thousand years. They were integrated into the general population and pretty much disappeared as a distinct culture somewhere in the 18th century. Fortunately, their wonderful art lives on. Jade green patina. 5.75 tall."
