Very rare Hindu figure from Burma, possibly as early as the Pyu period. This piece is closely related to item 9002 on my website, though I am not certain it is quite as early as that example—still, the similarities are remarkable. The sculpture measures 5.625" high x 3.75" wide (not including the custom base).
Provenance is exceptional: from the lifetime collection of Roger McCarthy, who served 30 years in the CIA (1952–1982). During his distinguished career he held positions including Case Officer, Regional Officer in Charge, Deputy Chief of Station, and Chief of Station, and served in Japan, Thailand, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Peru, Burma, and Laos. He was one of the early paramilitary trainers involved in operations in Indonesia, Korea, Tibet, Vietnam, and Laos.
A charming and exceedingly rare example of its type, with a wonderfully expressive face that brings a smile to everyone who sees it.
