Magnificent 15th-Century Thai Buddha Head. Early Ayutthaya / Kamphaeng Phet Period — Royal Foundry Work. This superb 15th Century Thai Buddha head originates from a high-level—likely royal—foundry, and once formed part of a life-size Buddha cast in multiple sections. Even the head itself was produced using a multi-part casting technique, a method reserved for the finest and most ambitious works of the early Ayutthaya period. This approach allowed artisans to achieve the utmost precision, realism, and spiritual presence in the completed figure.
The stylistic and technical features align with early Ayutthaya craftsmanship and may also relate to the Kamphaeng Phet school, active shortly after the Sukhothai period near the beginning of Ayutthaya rule. Historically, Kamphaeng Phet held close artistic ties to Sukhothai—the grandfather of the first King of Kamphaeng Phet was, in fact, the final King of Sukhothai—further reinforcing the transitional elegance seen here.
The head alone measures 9.75 inches in height (bronze only), and is presented on a newly crafted, museum-style custom base. The sculpture displays a serene, noble visage with refined contours, soft transitions, and a powerful sense of spiritual dignity—hallmarks of elite foundry production during this era. A world-class fragment, remarkable for its craftsmanship, historical significance, and enduring presence.
