Country Group: South and Southeast Asia (Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam)
This is a striking and large Indian multi-headed deity. It is deeply carved, and (unlike the majority of this type of piece) retains the majority of its polychrome. I generally do not buy this kind of piece, but I was at an auction house and saw it across the room and found it simply mesmerizing, and bid a significant amount for it. It was probably originally part of a ceremonial cart which was used during religious processions. It is 26.5 inches tall by 14 inches wide by 3.5 inches deep and fairly heavy for a wooden object. Note the expressive faces, the wonderful bird at his feet, and the overall superb composition of the piece. This is the best piece of its type I have ever had the pleasure of owning.
