Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
13th/14th Century Tibetan Bronze Buddha / Bodhisattva. This exquisite 13th–14th Century Tibetan bronze Buddha/Bodhisattva is a jewel of early Himalayan sculpture. Measuring 5⅝ inches tall, the figure possesses a quiet presence and refinement that become immediately apparent when studying the photographs—each detail speaks for itself. The piece comes from a distinguished Manhattan estate collection of early Tibetan bronzes, dispersed many years ago upon the collector’s retirement. Of all the sculptures in that group, I held onto this example the longest, as it stood out as one of the finest in the collection—superior in serenity, proportion, and casting quality.
The form is elegant and harmonious, with beautifully modeled features and a patina that reflects centuries of careful preservation. Though intimate in scale, the figure carries a powerful spiritual resonance and a craftsmanship level seldom seen in Tibetan bronzes of this period. A truly special early Tibetan bronze—one of the best from an already exceptional collection.
