Country Group: The Himalayas (Tibet, Nepal, Mongolia and Other)
Very Early Tibetan / Himalayan Bronze Figure Holding Club — Likely 11th Century or Earlier. This rare early Tibetan/Himalayan bronze figure—depicted holding a club or similar implement—is an exceptional and unusually early example of regional Buddhist sculpture. Based on comparison with other early Himalayan bronzes, a date of circa 11th century is most probable, though an even earlier origin remains entirely possible.
I have shown this piece to several highly knowledgeable collectors and dealers. None had encountered another example quite like it, and all agreed on its notably early date. The figure exhibits hallmark traits seen in some of the earliest sculptural phases across the Himalayan and greater South Asian world: the prominent, bubble-like eyes, the large, expressive hands, and the simplified forms reminiscent of early Kashmir, Pala, Swat, and Pyu traditions. These features strongly support an origin from a transitional period when local workshops were absorbing and adapting wider stylistic influences. Despite its age and rugged power, the figure carries a surprisingly gentle and approachable personality, a quality that adds to its charm and spiritual resonance.

This is an extraordinary early Himalayan bronze—rare, character-filled, and deeply compelling. Pieces of this age, with such individuality, seldom appear on the market.
