Wonderful One-of-a-Kind 16th–18th Century Kandy-Period Sri Lankan Buddha. This exceptional Kandy-period Sri Lankan Buddha is truly one of a kind. In excellent condition, it retains its original, high-quality mercury gilding, which remains beautifully preserved across the surface. The only loss is the flame finial, and it may originally have had a separate base and/or backplate. Evidence suggests it was once mounted, as indicated by an old patch on the back of the base.
The figure is astonishingly heavy for its size—measuring approximately 7 inches tall, 6.5 inches wide, and over 4 inches deep, yet weighing an impressive 9.5 pounds. The custom museum-style stand raises the overall height to 8.75 inches, and in person the sculpture feels even larger and more substantial than the measurements suggest. I have owned this Buddha for nearly 25 years, and in all that time I have never encountered another example like it—not in private collections, not in auctions, and not even in published references. Its superior casting quality, rich gilding, and distinctive form are difficult to fully capture in photographs.
The starting price has been significantly reduced, making this a rare opportunity to acquire a uniquely powerful and exquisitely crafted Kandy-period temple Buddha.
