Korean Buddha with a provenance note fixed to the lower inside that was placed there in 1952 during the Korean War. It clearly had long years of devotion on an altar with incense and or butterfat lamps that developed a strong patina that covered the entire surface over time. The style of this piece goes back more than a thousand years, though it is more likely that this piece is a few hundred years old. This type is hard to date precisely because they have made this style for so long to "honor the elders". I will estimate it at 18 19th century to be conservative. Many of the best Korean Buddhas I have been able to acquire over the past several decades have been from Korean veterans or from their families, as so many Korean Buddhas were melted down during the Korean War or shortly afterward. It is rare and desirable to find a note like the one attached to the inside of this one, which confirms the exact place and time that it was acquired.
