Large 16/17thC Korean Bodhisattva of Compassion (Kannon, or Korean equivalent of Guanyin). It looks contemporary with Early Ming, though I am unsure how to date precisely. The beautiful fragrance of camphor wood still comes through strongly. It looks to have been repainted or freshened many times. Please ask if you want more details on the condition. The patina is complex and still evolving (still shedding bits of gesso and lacquer, exposing the underlying material of the look of this particular sculpture)). Possible repairs to the arms, with one loose(probably loose a very long time). There is some shortening of fingers, but otherwise, it appears original and complete. Very skillful use of asymmetry in the overall composition. The subtle differences in the two sides of the headdress, ribbons, and jewelry are balanced perfectly by the very unusual Mudra or hand position. A large piece at 22 and 7/8 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 10 and 1/2 inches deep. Big presence- fills a room. ( 14.32lbs / 6.495kg )
