Very fine 14thC Classic Thai Sukhothai Buddha head. Near life-size at 8" tall and 12.25" on its custom base. High end type typically sculpted and cast in the royal foundries. The top and back of the head were made as a separate section, along with the left ear. The finial (along with the torso, arms, hands, etc.) were all cast separately and then joined. The entire statue was then lacquered and gilded, completely hiding all of the joinery. Remains of the original inlaid eyes are in evidence. A superb example from the high point of Thai sculpture. This piece is accompanied with an appraisal from Sotheby's, New York, dated June 21, 2000. In it Sotheby's offers this same piece in an upcoming auction at that time (18 years ago) , with an estimated value of $4000-6000. A photo of the letter has been included with the attached photos.
