This is a unique solid cast early 19thC Mandalay reclining Buddha- in 20 years of collecting SE Asian bronzes and studying every book on them English I could get my hands on, it is the only finely cast example of its type I have seen. It was hard to capture the golden buttery soft surface and the very high quality of the bronze (note: the white you see is the remains of an old cleaning- it can be removed, but I have not attempted to do so). The flow of the robes and the over all composition of the piece make him all come together to make this a beautiful sculpture. The red stones remaining look to be authentic low grade rubies, and the green bits are decorative mirror-like pieces were used at that time to emulate green gems. He is a nice size at 9 inches long by 2.5 inches tall at the head. He is substantial at over 30 ounces. A personal favorite.
