18/19th-century Buddhist altar table from Tibet or China. A long-time favorite piece that I have used it as a personal altar in my home for almost 3 decades.
The thing that makes it so special is the almost 3-dimensional design work on the surface using lacquer or thick paint. The condition is what you expect to see given its age. There is expectable wear and dings on the corners. ( 19"L x 7.375"W x 7.25"D x 7.25"H )
The designs are carefully done in different repeating abstract Buddhist symbols. When it was first made, this altar was probably very bright-It did not have the mellow, gentle patina that it has now. There are remains of red on the background of the sides of the table near the top suggesting that parts of the background may have originally been red. Many of these types are folding tables or were originally folding tables. This one was always made as a permanent standing table. As such it is much more solid and stable.
